Cedges Drinks – Strawberry Summer Mash

A year or two ago the housemate who owned most of the furniture in our Victorian share house moved out leaving the other remaining housemate and I with little else except a TV stand and dining table set. Luckily a couple of sofas appeared courtesy of my housemate and I purchased an interim Ikea coffee table (of course that remains to this day!). I also spent quite sometime scouring East Dulwich Forum for other items and was lucky enough to find an awesome retro cocktail cabinet for under £50.00. Cue a mission to stock it and then drink it!


This cocktail, like most of my creations, was borne as a result of heady boredom and some staring into the fridge. Whatever works. And this did.

Makes 4


Small Punnet of Ripe Strawberries
2 tbsp Caster Sugar or Sugar Syrup
2 Fresh Lemons
2 shots Cointreau (Or another orange based liqueur)
2 shots Cachaca (Or white rum with some bitters added)
2 Shots Honey or Golden Rum
4 Shots Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka
Lots of Crushed Ice
Fresh Mint for garnish

Take a Small Punnet of Ripe Strawberries, remove the tops and cut into quarters. Place in a medium size mixing bowl.

Chop 2 Fresh Lemons, skin and all into smallish pieces, removing the pips as you go and add to the strawberries.

Add 2 tbsp Caster Sugar or Sugar Syrup to the fruit and muddle until all of the strawberries are mushed right down.

Tip – Muddling is the posh cocktail name for pounding and mushing. You can buy actual muddling implements or use the end of a rolling pin.

Add 2 shots of Cointreau, 4 shots of Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka, 2 shots of Honey or Golden Rum and 2 shots of Cachaca and stir until combined.

Tip – Taste it at this point. If you like it sweeter, add a bit more sugar. If you like it more bitter, add some lemon or lime juice. If it’s not boozy enough, add more booze!

Tip – Honey Rum comes from Fuerteventura and is delicious and sweet, great cut with lime.

Tip – Cachaca is a Brazilian spirit made from sugarcane and the main base for a Caipirinha (recipe coming soon). I bought the last lot from Amazon but Sainsbury’s now also sell a bottle so its getting much more easy to find.

Divide the mixture, fruit and all into 4 tumblers.

Add as much Crushed Ice to the glasses as you can make fit.

Top with Soda Water and garnish each with a Sprig of Mint.
